Crystal Cake Toppers
Crystal cake toppers - An interview with Sari Watkins of Cake Toppers With Glitz
I'm a sucker for serendipity, especially if it revolves around romance and wedding cakes. So naturally I wanted to know more about Sari Watkins. She had the unexpected good fortune of meeting the right people at the right time and on her wedding day Sari started down a new path with her husband and crystal cake toppers. When first visiting her website Toppers With Glitz I was struck by the beauty on her home page. But her personable approach and the fact that she hand crafts each individual cake topper herself, was the clincher for me. Please enjoy the following interview with Sari Watkins and get a little insight into her world of crystal cake toppers with glitz and glamor.

Lorelie-Congratulations on garnering the attention of the media. You have had quite a bit of coverage in well respected places! You must be very proud! Can you give us a little tid bit about you personally? Something that our readers would find interesting?
Sari-Thank you! The attention from the media definitely keeps things exciting! I actually grew up in Los Angeles but unlike most vying for the spotlight, I fled from it. I take pride when my company or my products get attention in the media but I'd just about die if I had to do any personal appearances. Not that I would turn down a chance to be on Oprah or anything but it might take a few sedatives to get me in front of any camera.
Lorelie-I love your story about how you got started in the crystal cake toppers business. Can you tell me and my readers more about this random forum post you speak of?
Sari-It was a post on "The Knot" that caught my attention. Vicki's monogrammed wedding cake toppers were in such demand that she was looking for an assistant to help her. The detailed crystal work sounded right up my alley so I responded to her post. The rest is history!
Lorelie-Did you have other creative avenues, prior to this, or other
similar interests?
Sari-I was stuck in a corporate job that was suffocating me. I was desperately searching for creative outlets when I came across Vicki's forum post. They say fate is when timing meets opportunity. Everything slipped so perfectly into place -- I was longing for a career change and Vicki wanted to focus on
starting her family -- that I feel it was truly fate that brought us into each others lives. I have never felt more fulfilled and Vicki is the proud mother of 3 thriving kids.
Lorelie-What is your favorite or most memorable cake topper? Why is it special?Sari-I love when couples make their weddings about them and bring in personal decorating nuances to help tell their story to their guests. A couple in the Air Force asked me to make a particular kind of plane. The plane represented their common bond and how they met. The propellers and shape of the plane had to be just right because those features distinguished it as a "C-130". You don't have to know anything about planes to appreciate the sentiment that those details would have to this couple. I loved making that topper. Those are the crystal cake toppers I'll never forget. Lorelie-I have read that monogrammed cake toppers are a trend at the moment. Is this true? And if so what do you attribute this popularity to? Do you see this trend continuing? Sari-I think having anything other than the bride and groom figurines are 'in' right now. (Aren't we all thankful for that!?) By definition, all trends come and go but I'd of course love to see monogram cake toppers stick around as long as figurines did in their hay-day. I think the monogram represents the unity of a newly married couple perfectly. Embellishing the letters with Swavorski crystals makes it appropriate for any formal event so it's the perfect cake topper! Lorelie-I love the suggestions that you make on your web site about the many decorative ways to use the crystal cake toppers after the big day. Can or do your customers post their suggestions and ideas on your blog? Sari-My customers are great. They email me pictures and ideas all the time which I in turn post to my site (or blog). I recently started a Facebook fan page for less formal postings It's been a great way for brides in the planning stage to be notified of fresh ideas and for my married brides to hear about any new keepsake ideas. Lorelie-I see that you have additional monogram products for weddings and celebrations. Can you tell us more about these? I especially love the crystal cake trim for wedding cakes. Sari-My bouquet letters align with the monogram theme of my product line but I have also extended the crystal theme. I have most recently added stone-filled stemmed toasting flutes and crystal trim to my product line. The trim is jaw-dropping! One of my brides sent me a picture of a cake with the trim and asked if I offered it or knew where to get it. I contacted my Swarovski representative and have featured it on my website ever since!
