Use as is for "glue" for gingerbread construction or thicken it with additional powdered sugar.
For outlines - By adding a few drops of water to thin the icing slightly for crisp outlines
For top coating - By gradually adding water a tablespoon at a time to thin the icing to spreading consistency.
For stenciling - Adding 2- 4 tablespoons of water until the icing spreads without leaving any track marks or peaks.
For beadwork - Add 2 tablespoons water or more. At the the correct consistency the frosting will form a well rounded dot when piped.
