Love Birds Cake Topper

Love Birds Cake Topper

I could use help with with wedding cake decorating ideas. I took on the big challenge of baking my friends wedding cake and this will be my first one! And to make it even more challenging I'm in the Wedding party!!

I have the confidence in baking and stacking the but decorating is where I'm lost. She has her topper picked out already. (see the picture) but I cannot seem to make the topper flow with the design ideas that the bride has chosen.

I'm going to do 3 tiers with a back up sheet . The reason I have to do sheet is because she ordered a wood slice platter that is 18x12 and I don't have an oval pan to fit to that size. So the cake will be 11'' 8'' 5'' this way you can still see the tree bark.

She has told me she likes the cluster pearls from the attached cake. I would do that as the middle tier. And for the bottom tier gumpaste roses with green leaves and dragees place in the rose either scattered around the bottom or clustered in groups.

I would be ordering the roses, leaves, dragees from Global Sugar Art. I feel that it doesn't seem to flow right and I don't know how to make it flow. I don't even know what to do to the top tier.

I feel as if I need to copy something from the topper to bring it all together. Please help me in any way you can. Any advice is better than none :) I'm open to new ideas nothing is set in stone yet.

Thank you

Design Ideas
by: Lorelie

Hi Stephanie,

First of all you are a brave soul to take on this challenge. You will do fine as long as you plan ahead and get as much done before the big day as possible.

I think you are on the right track so far with your ideas. I love the Lovebirds topper. Why not do a few scattered dragees on the 6 inch cake and then roses around the topper or just a few at the base of the 6 inch cake.

I think simple will be best with this cake which has kind of a woodland theme to it. So don't over think it too much. Often a design idea will come to you as you are decorating.

Now let's hear from other cake decorators who may be able to help.

Another Thought
by: Lorelie

I just had another thought. The base is a natural wood and the nest also had the natural look to it with the twigs so these two elements will tie the whole cake together. I would probably incorporate a small bit of this natural look on the second tier, An offset bit of something natural looking branches either real, silk or made out of chocolate.

I once made a cake with a twig cake dipped in chocolate. That could tie it all together.

An idea for you
by: Lydia

Hi Stephanie,

I started off my cake decorating life by doing the exact same thing, making a cake for my friends wedding!
Keep it simple. Why not use a fabric sugarpaste effect to join the tiers together and put a rose or group of roses on each tier, this serves to create the illusion that it is one continuous flow of fabric when in fact you have cheated and made it out of several bits. Then as you have already said use the cluster pearls on the middle tier. This should give the flow you are looking for.

If you are not sure what I mean, let me know and I can send you a photo.
Good luck!

Thanks Stephanie
by: Lorelie

Great idea Stephanie. I too started my career by a friend asking me to do her cake. I love the draping fondant look and keeping it simple as I also had suggested is good advice, especially for a first time wedding cake. Thanks for your help. If you want to add the picture you can email it to me at cpastrychef@gmail.com I would love to add it to the post.

Thanks
