Sugar Cookie Recipe
This is a very basic and easy dough to make. I like it because the cookies are nice and firm for decorating. They are not very sweet, but once the icing goes on they are perfect. I use this recipe for the Heart Shaped cookies from Cookie Swap: Creative Treats to Share Throughout the Year

Recipe for rolled sugar cookies for decorating from:The Complete Book of Baking- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup margarine or butter (I use butter)
- 3 Tablespoons of milk
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 1 egg
- 3 cups of all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
In a large bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, butter, milk, vanilla and egg;blend well. Stir in flour baking soda and salt;mix well. Cover with plastic wrap;refrigerate 1 hour for easier handling.
Heat oven to 400 F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out 1/3 of the dough at a time to 1/8 inch thickness. Keep remaining dough refrigerated. Cut with floured cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart on un greased cookie sheets.Bake at 400 F for 5-9 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheets or pan.
5-6 dozen cookies
